Give your AI assistant live exchange rates

The official CurrencyFreaks MCP server adds 7 currency tools to Claude, Cursor, VS Code and any MCP client. Ask for a rate, a conversion or a 30-day move in plain English, and the model fetches real numbers for 1000+ fiat, crypto and metal currencies instead of guessing from its training data.

Why it exists

Models don’t know today’s rate. Now they can look it up.

A language model's idea of USD to PKR is frozen at its training cutoff. Ask the same question with the MCP server connected and the answer comes from a live API call, with a timestamp you can check.

Without the serverGuess

“Convert 500 USD to PKR.”

I don’t have access to live exchange rates. Based on my training data, 1 USD was roughly 278 PKR, so 500 USD would be around 139,000 PKR. Please check a financial website for the current rate.

With CurrencyFreaks MCPSourced

“Convert 500 USD to PKR.”

convert_currency

500 USD is 140,841.48 PKR at a rate of 281.683, as of 2026-08-25 15:22 UTC.

Exact to the decimal

Rates and amounts come back as strings, so nothing gets rounded by floating-point math between the API and the answer.

Errors the model can explain

A 402 doesn't reach you as a bare status code. It carries a guidance field telling the model which plan unlocks the tool.

Runs on your machine

Your client starts the server with npx over stdio. Your key stays in your local config and only goes to api.currencyfreaks.com.

How it works

Four hops from question to answer

The server is a thin, typed layer over the CurrencyFreaks v2.0 REST API. It validates input before spending a request, then hands structured JSON back to the model.

  1. 1

    You ask

“How much has the yen moved against the dollar since June 1st?”

  2. 2

    Client picks a tool

    get_fluctuation base=USD symbols=JPY

  3. 3

    Server calls the API

    GET /v2.0/fluctuation + your apikey

  4. 4

    Model answers

Start rate, end rate and percent change, in a sentence.

Setup

Search the catalogue by code, name or country. Pass detailed=true to get each currency’s status, flag and the date range its historical data covers. It reads public endpoints, so it works before you add a key.

Plan requirements

Start free, unlock tools as you need them

On the free plan the model can read latest rates against USD and search the catalogue. A call above your plan returns a 402 with guidance instead of failing silently.

Error handling

A failed call still gives the model something useful

Tool calls never crash the server. Upstream errors come back as structured results with a guidance field, so your assistant can tell you to fix the key or upgrade instead of repeating a status code.

}

What your assistant says

What’s the EUR rate right now?

Assistant: I couldn’t fetch rates because your CurrencyFreaks API key was rejected. Check CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY in your MCP client config and make sure the key is active on your dashboard.

  1. 01

    What is an MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI clients such as Claude, Cursor and VS Code call outside tools. An MCP server is the small program that exposes those tools. The CurrencyFreaks MCP server exposes 7 currency tools backed by the CurrencyFreaks v2.0 REST API.

  2. 02

Is the CurrencyFreaks MCP server free?

The server is open source under the MIT license. You need a CurrencyFreaks API key, and the free Developer plan gives you 1,000 requests a month with no card. On that plan get_latest_rates (USD base) and list_currencies work. Conversion, historical data, time series, fluctuation and IP-to-currency need a paid plan.

  3. 03

Which AI clients does it work with?

Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Cline and Codex CLI each have a documented setup. Any other client that runs MCP servers over stdio works with the same npx command.

  4. 04

Where does my API key go?

The key lives in the env block of your MCP client config on your own machine. The server runs locally through npx, reads CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY on each call and sends it only to api.currencyfreaks.com.

  5. 05

Does every prompt use up my API quota?

Each tool call is one request to the CurrencyFreaks API and counts toward your monthly quota. A single prompt can trigger more than one tool call if the model needs several lookups. list_currencies reads public catalogue endpoints that don't need a key.

  6. 06

Why did a tool return a very large response?

Without symbols, the rate tools return all 1000+ currencies. Ask for specific currencies, or tell the model to pass symbols, and pass search to list_currencies. The full detailed catalogue is about 270 KB.
