Every currency has a symbol — the dollar sign ($), euro sign (€), pound sign (£) — and most currencies share theirs with several others. This page lists every currency symbol in use today, alongside its ISO 4217 code, the countries that use it, and the Unicode character you need to type it. Looking for money symbols or money signs for a specific region? They are all in the table below.

Why some currency symbols are shared

The dollar sign is used by more than 20 currencies because most were historically pegged to, or modeled after, the US dollar or Spanish colonial dollar. Context — or the currency code — determines which dollar is meant. The same applies to the pound sign (£), which covers the British pound (GBP), Egyptian pound (EGP), and several others.

This ambiguity is precisely why the ISO 4217 standard exists. CurrencyFreaks’ API always uses the unambiguous three-letter ISO code (USD, CAD, AUD) rather than the shared symbol — so your application never confuses a Canadian dollar for a US dollar.

How to type currency symbols

Common money signs like $ and € have dedicated keyboard shortcuts on most operating systems. The rarer symbols are best entered via the HTML entity or Unicode codepoint — copy directly from the table above, or use your OS character viewer.
