# CurrencyFreaks — Full Reference > CurrencyFreaks (currencyfreaks.com) is a first-party REST API for live and historical foreign exchange rates, currency conversion and currency metadata. It covers 166 fiat currencies, 873 cryptocurrencies and 4 precious metals (1,000+ currencies in total) in JSON or XML from one base URL, https://api.currencyfreaks.com/v2.0. The free Developer plan gives 1,000 API calls a month with daily refresh, USD base and SSL, no credit card required. Paid plans from $9.99 a month refresh hourly, every 10 minutes or every 60 seconds and unlock any base currency, conversion, historical rates back to 1984-11-28, time series, fluctuation and IP-to-currency. The official @currencyfreaks/mcp MCP server (MIT) exposes 7 tools to Claude, Cursor, VS Code and any MCP client. --- ## Platform overview CurrencyFreaks is built and operated by JFreaks Software Solutions (Lahore, Pakistan), the team behind ipgeolocation.io, WhoisFreaks and APIFreaks. It is a first-party data provider: rates are collected from forex exchanges and banks in real time, processed, and served through one REST API. - Coverage: 166 fiat currencies, 873 cryptocurrencies and 4 precious metals (XAU gold, XAG silver, XPT platinum, XPD palladium). 1,000+ currencies in total. Deprecated codes are kept in the catalogue with status DEPRECATED and an availableUntil date. - Refresh cadence by plan: every 24 hours at 00:00 UTC (Developer), hourly (Starter), every 10 minutes (Growth), every 60 seconds (Professional and Enterprise). - History: daily rates back to 1984-11-28 for major fiat currencies. Newer currencies and crypto start from their own listing date (BTC from 2013-01-07, XPT from 2020-09-02). Per-currency ranges come from /historical-data-limits. - Formats: JSON by default, XML with format=xml. All rates and amounts are returned as strings. - Transport: HTTPS on every plan, including free. 134 ms average global latency. Public status page at https://status.currencyfreaks.com/. - Scale: 33,555+ registered developers. Customers include HP, Gartner, University of Georgia, Equiti, Timify, Exigo and Savart. Rated on Trustpilot. - Dashboard: https://billing.currencyfreaks.com (API key, plan changes, usage). ### Authentication and formats - Base URL: `https://api.currencyfreaks.com/v2.0/` + endpoint path (for example `/rates/latest`, `/convert/latest`). - Auth: `?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY` query parameter on every request. Keys come from the dashboard after a free signup (no credit card). Do not embed the key in client-side JavaScript; call the API from a server or proxy. - Method: HTTP GET. Currency codes are case-insensitive. `symbols` takes a comma-separated list such as `EUR,GBP,PKR`. - Response format: JSON by default; `format=xml` for XML. In XML, currency codes that start with a digit are prefixed with an underscore (for example `<_1INCH>`). - Error envelope: every 4xx response is JSON with `timestamp`, `status`, `error`, `message` and `path` fields. Branch on `status`, log `message`. - Support: support@currencyfreaks.com and https://currencyfreaks.com/contact. Postman collection: https://documenter.getpostman.com/view/57124893/2sBY4TryiX. ### Quotas and rate limits - The only limit is the plan quota (monthly, or yearly on annual billing). There is no per-second, hourly or daily throttle; a whole month's quota can be used in one day. - Paid plans get email notifications at 80%, 90% and 100% of usage, then a further 10% of the plan limit is served before requests stop until the next billing cycle or an upgrade. - The free plan gets one notification at 100% and then stops until the next month. - Exceeding the quota returns HTTP 429. Calling an endpoint above your plan returns HTTP 402 with the plan name that unlocks it. --- ## Plans and pricing Human-readable page: https://currencyfreaks.com/pricing. Sign up: https://currencyfreaks.com/signup. VAT is not included. Plans can be upgraded or downgraded at any time from the dashboard. Payment by credit or debit card and PayPal, processed by FastSpring and Paddle. GDPR compliant, with a DPA available on request. | Plan | Price | API calls | Refresh | Base currency | Endpoints | Support | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Developer | Free | 1,000 / month | Every 24 hours (00:00 UTC) | USD only | Latest rates, symbols filter, key-free metadata endpoints | Limited | | Starter | $9.99 / month or $99.99 / year | 15,000 / month (180,000 / year) | Hourly | Any | Developer + any base currency, latest conversion, historical rates, historical conversion | Basic | | Growth | $49.99 / month or $499.99 / year | 150,000 / month (1.8 million / year) | Every 10 minutes | Any | Starter + IP to Currency; free trial available | Premium | | Professional | $99.99 / month or $999.99 / year | 550,000 / month (6.6 million / year) | Every 60 seconds | Any | Growth + Time Series and Fluctuation | Premium | | Enterprise | Custom | Custom volume | Every 60 seconds | Any | Everything, custom SLA, tailored solutions | Dedicated | - Annual billing is priced at 10 months (Starter $99.99, Growth $499.99, Professional $999.99 a year) and pools 12 months of quota. - Growth offers a free trial via https://currencyfreaks.com/signup?trial=true. - Enterprise: custom volume, custom SLA, dedicated support and tailored solutions; contact sales through https://currencyfreaks.com/contact. - Every plan includes SSL, JSON and XML output, and the three key-free metadata endpoints. --- ## API endpoints All paths are relative to `https://api.currencyfreaks.com/v2.0`. Available on: All plans (base needs a paid plan). ``` GET /v2.0/rates/latest?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY&symbols=PKR,GBP,EUR,USD ``` ```json { "date": "2026-08-25 13:26:00+00", "base": "USD", "rates": { "EUR": "0.9278605451274349", "GBP": "0.8172754173817152", "PKR": "281.6212943333344", "USD": "1.0" } } ``` | Parameter | Required | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | apikey | required | Account API key. | | symbols | optional | Comma-separated currency codes. Omit for all 1,000+ currencies. | | base | optional | Base currency code (default USD). Paid plans only; on the free plan it returns a 402. | | format | optional | json (default) or xml. | - Omitting symbols returns every currency; pass symbols to cut response size and latency. - Rates are strings, not numbers, to avoid floating-point rounding. Convert with parseFloat or Decimal in your code. - Refresh cadence follows the plan: daily, hourly, 10 minutes or 60 seconds. ### Latest Conversion — `/convert/latest` Convert an amount between two currencies at the latest rate. Available on: Starter and above. ``` GET /v2.0/convert/latest?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY&from=USD&to=PKR&amount=500 ``` ```json { "date": "2026-08-25 15:22:00+00", "from": "USD", "to": "PKR", "rate": "281.683", "givenAmount": "500.0", "convertedAmount": "140841.475" } ``` | Parameter | Required | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | apikey | required | Account API key. | | from | required | Source currency code. | | to | required | Target currency code. | | amount | optional | Amount to convert (default 1.0). | ### Historical Rates — `/rates/historical` Exchange rates for a past date. Major fiat currencies go back to 1984-11-28; newer currencies and crypto start from their own listing date. Available on: Starter and above. ``` GET /v2.0/rates/historical?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY&date=2026-08-20&base=GBP&symbols=USD,EUR,PKR,CAD ``` ```json { "date": "2026-08-20", "base": "GBP", "rates": { "USD": "...", "EUR": "...", "PKR": "...", "CAD": "..." } } ``` | Parameter | Required | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | apikey | required | Account API key. | | date | required | Date in YYYY-MM-DD format. | | base | optional | Base currency code (default USD). | | symbols | optional | Comma-separated currency codes. | - Check per-currency coverage with /historical-data-limits before requesting old dates; a date outside the range returns a 404 with the available range in the message. ### Time Series — `/timeseries` Daily historical rates between two dates, one entry per day. Available on: Professional and above. ``` GET /v2.0/timeseries?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY&startDate=2026-07-01&endDate=2026-07-07&base=EUR&symbols=PKR,USD ``` ```json { "startDate": "2026-07-01", "endDate": "2026-07-07", "base": "EUR", "historicalRatesList": [ { "date": "2026-07-01", "rates": { "PKR": "...", "USD": "..." } }, { "date": "2026-07-02", "rates": { "PKR": "...", "USD": "..." } } ] } ``` | Parameter | Required | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | apikey | required | Account API key. | | startDate | required | Start of the range, YYYY-MM-DD. | | endDate | optional | End of the range, YYYY-MM-DD (default: the day before today). | | base | optional | Base currency code (default USD). | | symbols | optional | Comma-separated currency codes. | - One request returns the whole range, so a year of daily rates costs one call instead of 365. - startDate after today or after endDate returns a 400. ### Fluctuation — `/fluctuation` Start rate, end rate, absolute change and percent change for each currency between two dates. Available on: Professional and above. ``` GET /v2.0/fluctuation?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY&startDate=2026-06-01&endDate=2026-06-15&symbols=PKR&base=GBP ``` ```json { "startDate": "2026-06-01", "endDate": "2026-06-15", "base": "GBP", "rateFluctuations": { "PKR": { "startRate": "254.331", "endRate": "243.874", "change": "10.457", "percentChange": "4.11" } } } ``` | Parameter | Required | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | apikey | required | Account API key. | | startDate | required | Start of the range, YYYY-MM-DD. | | endDate | optional | End of the range, YYYY-MM-DD (default: the day before today). | | base | optional | Base currency code (default USD). | | symbols | optional | Comma-separated currency codes. | ### Historical Conversion — `/convert/historical` Convert an amount using the rate on a past date. There is no `to` parameter; the API returns the resolved currency as the `to` field. Available on: Growth and above. ``` GET /v2.0/iptocurrency?apikey=YOUR_APIKEY&from=GBP&ip=182.186.18.91&amount=500 ``` ```json { "date": "2026-08-25 08:03:00+00", "from": "GBP", "to": "PKR", "rate": "346.232", "ipAddress": "182.186.18.91", "givenAmount": "500.0", "convertedAmount": "173115.892" } ``` | Parameter | Required | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | apikey | required | Account API key. | | from | required | Source currency code. | | ip | optional | IPv4 or IPv6 address. It runs locally over stdio, validates input before spending a request, returns structured JSON to the model, and turns upstream errors into results with a `guidance` field so the assistant can explain what to fix. - Package: `@currencyfreaks/mcp` (npm), MIT license, Node.js 18+ with npx on PATH. - Start command: `npx -y @currencyfreaks/mcp` - Environment variable: `CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY` (required for every tool except list_currencies). The key stays in the local client config and is sent only to api.currencyfreaks.com. - Page: https://currencyfreaks.com/mcp-server. Source and issues: https://github.com/CurrencyFreaks/currencyfreaks-mcp - Supported clients: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Cline, Codex CLI, and any client that runs MCP servers over stdio. - Cost: the server is free; each tool call is one API request against the plan quota. One prompt can trigger several tool calls. list_currencies reads key-free endpoints and costs nothing. - Free plan: get_latest_rates (USD base) and list_currencies work. convert_currency, get_historical_rates, ip_to_currency, get_time_series and get_fluctuation need the plans listed below. The `base` parameter needs Starter or above on every tool. A call above the plan returns a 402 result with guidance instead of failing silently. - Response size: without `symbols` the rate tools return all 1,000+ currencies; the full detailed catalogue from list_currencies is about 270 KB. Pass `symbols` or `search` to keep results small. ### Setup 1. Get a free API key at https://currencyfreaks.com/signup (1,000 requests a month, no card). 2. Add the server to the client config (table below). 3. Restart the client; MCP clients read their server list at startup. 4. Ask a question such as "What's the current EUR to USD exchange rate?"; the client calls get_latest_rates. | Client | Where | What to add | | --- | --- | --- | | Claude Desktop | claude_desktop_config.json (Settings > Developer > Edit Config) | JSON block below | | Claude Code | terminal | claude mcp add currencyfreaks --env CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY= -- npx -y @currencyfreaks/mcp | | Cursor | .cursor/mcp.json (or one-click install) | JSON block below | | Windsurf | ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json | JSON block below | | VS Code (GitHub Copilot) | settings.json under the mcp.servers key | Same server object under "mcp": { "servers": { ... } } | | Cline | cline_mcp_settings.json (MCP Servers > Configure > Advanced MCP Settings) | JSON block below | | Codex CLI | terminal | codex mcp add currencyfreaks --env CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY= -- npx -y @currencyfreaks/mcp | | Any stdio MCP client | client config | command npx, args ["-y", "@currencyfreaks/mcp"], env CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY | ```json { "mcpServers": { "currencyfreaks": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@currencyfreaks/mcp"], "env": { "CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY": "" } } } } ``` ```bash claude mcp add currencyfreaks --env CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY= -- npx -y @currencyfreaks/mcp codex mcp add currencyfreaks --env CURRENCYFREAKS_API_KEY= -- npx -y @currencyfreaks/mcp ``` ### The 7 tools Describe what you need in plain language; the client picks the tool. Currency codes are case-insensitive and `symbols` takes a comma-separated list. | Tool | Parameters | Calls | Plan | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | get_latest_rates | symbols, base | GET /v2.0/rates/latest | Free (USD base); base needs Starter+ | | list_currencies | search, detailed | GET /v2.0/currency-symbols, /supported-currencies, /historical-data-limits | No key needed | | convert_currency | from, to, amount, date | GET /v2.0/convert/latest or /convert/historical when date is passed | Starter+ | | get_historical_rates | date, symbols, base | GET /v2.0/rates/historical | Starter+ | | ip_to_currency | from, ip, amount | GET /v2.0/iptocurrency | Growth+ | | get_time_series | startDate, endDate, symbols, base | GET /v2.0/timeseries | Professional+ | | get_fluctuation | startDate, endDate, symbols, base | GET /v2.0/fluctuation | Professional+ | - list_currencies searches the catalogue by code, name or country; `detailed=true` adds status, flag and the historical date range per currency. - convert_currency uses the latest rate, or the rate on `date` when one is passed. - Error results carry `error`, `code`, `message` and `guidance`: 400 bad input, 401 invalid or inactive key, 402 plan upgrade needed, 404 no rates for that currency, date or range, 429 quota used up, 499 upstream timeout. --- ## Integrations Every integration calls the same endpoints with the same key and works on the free Developer plan.
